Place: UPV/EHU Bilbao.

Date: September 2-3 2013.

The European Union has responded to the financial and fiscal crisis initiated in 2008 with a number of policy instrument (from the Six Pack to the Fiscal Compact) which have afforded some relief to the most immediate problems of the Union. Yet, important issues remain unaddressed and, what is more important, the crisis seems far from being over. Moreover, deep concerns and issues on the meaning and impact of European integration are changing public perceptions in many member states, provoking a skeptical attitude towards the EU unpreviously seen. These challenges include issues which might range from the disintegration of the Euro to the possibility of generalising differentiated integration but, without any doubt, they converge around the discussion of three basic principles: legitimacy, democracy and justice.
